Hello and welcome to my site!

My name is Vinko Culjak Mathieu and it’s a pleasure to meet you! I guess if you are reading this page, you want to know a little bit more about myself and about this site. So here goes!

I’m currently a fourth-year student at the University of Ottawa in Canada, working to complete an Honours BSc with Specialization in Biology. Although I really enjoy learning  almost anything, I have a deep love for the natural sciences, so I’m studying general biology. Within biology, I have a particular interest in ecology and I’m considering declaring a specialization in Ecology, Evolution and Behavior (but that decision has not been made yet). I also have an incredibly insatiable love of insects. So entomology is a direction within ecology that I am definitely pointing my goals toward.

Many people ask me why I study biology or why I love it so much. The answer is simple: it is beautiful! Nature is infinitely complex. It does not matter at what scale you look at, you will always find beauty. You could look at an entire rainforest or a single tree. You could look at a line of ants crawling up the tree looking for resources or you could look at a single ant. You could look at the cells that make up the ant or the molecules that make up the cell. At every scale and at every point on Earth, nature has the capacity to astonish, amaze and surprise us with its beauty. I study biology because I want to see as much of this beauty as I can.

Now it’s important to note that, as many people already know, when you are a student, life seems to go by very fast as you move from one exciting adventure to another. That’s where this site comes in! I decided to create this blog in order to record my experiences, my discoveries and those things that leave me breathless. The core purpose of this site is pretty simple: I want this to be a a journal in which I write about what I do. I want this to be a repository of the stories that make up my life as I work towards accomplishing my goals. This site is for me, first and foremost. However, if you want to read about my experiences and enjoying doing so, then they are more than welcome to.

So you may be wondering what exactly I’ll be writing about. Fortunately, I’ve got plenty of ideas! I’ll be writing about my experiences in school: courses, labs, exams, research projects and textbooks. I’ll be writing about the work that I do. I’ll be sharing pictures and videos of insects, plants and other animals that amaze me. I’ll be sharing and writing about papers that I’ve read. And, of course, I’ll be writing about anything that catches my interest! My plan is to write at least once a week. There are times that I won’t be able to (ex. during exams) and there are times when I’ll be able post something much more often. Hopefully I can stick to my plan.

Hmmm…seems like I haven’t been too successful at blogging. I’m currently rearranging this site and slightly diverting its direction. It won’t act as a blog but will continue to showcase my work. Who knows, maybe I’ll try blogging again one day! In the mean time, stay tuned for a new look and more info on the projects I’ve worked on.

Anyways, I hope that I did a good job of explaining who I am and what this site is all about. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, feel free to write to me here.

Happy reading,
